Sometimes you want them right away, but if you're willing to wait a while you can usually get them for about half price.
As for buying individual games, wait for them to go on sale. And you can usually find 12 Month Gold for cheaper than $60. It converts 1-1 so you'll get 3 years of GPU for $180 instead of $180 per year. Game Pass Ultimate can be insane cheap if you buy 3 years of Xbox Live Gold and activate those first before upgrading to GPU. You have to have X|S games on the internal hard drive unless you buy the expensive storage expansion (not worth it in my opinion) but older games run fine from a USB drive. I have a Series X and still use an external drive for games that are not X|S and there are no issues. You're probably going to want an external hard drive regardless. GPU also includes EA Play which has quite a few additional games. It works but there are latency issues and some quality issues as well. GPU also includes PC if you play on PC at all. Game Pass does not include Xbox Live Gold. That's included with Game Pass Ultimate (GPU) or it's about $60 per year for just Gold. If you are going to play multiplayer, you need Xbox Live Gold at minimum.
